Over the last few years, this topic has been widely debated. Personally, I think immigrants should have to learn English within their first 2 years in America. It shows a genuine commitment to assimilate to American culture and ultimately be a part of a great community – where that immigrant should choose to settle.
I think one of the best ways to “vet” immigrants is to test their commitment and willingness to comply with the requirements set forth in order to maintain their citizenship. While none of these requirements should force the immigrant to give up their rights as a citizen, committing to learn the English language and also attending some form of American schooling (no matter what the age) would be great ways to test one’s commitment to their American citizenship. After all, living in America is a privilege, NOT A RIGHT!
