“On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer,” Andrew Lack, the NBC News president, said in the memo.
According to NBC President, Andrew Lack, the allegation against Matt Lauer “represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment.”
“While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
Mr. Lauer’s co-host, Savannah Guthrie, announced the news on “Today” on Wednesday morning. Appearing on the verge of tears, Ms. Guthrie said, “All we can say is we are heartbroken; I’m heartbroken.”
She described Mr. Lauer as “a dear, dear friend,” and said she was “heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story.”
The “Today” staff learned the news shortly before going live. Giving the weather report, a visibly shaken Al Roker said, “I’m still trying to process the news.”
What do you think about these allegations against Matt Lauer? Personally, I have always disliked the guy. I think he’s whiney and fake.
Fast company reported earlier:
“Earlier today, NBC announced that it fired longtime Today show co-host Matt Lauer over sexual harassment. It wasn’t clear for many hours what exactly happened to cause the network to cut ties with him. Now, Varietyhas published a jaw-dropping exposé, citing dozens of unnamed current and former staffers. According to the report, Lauer was a known harasser among his colleagues who frequently used his power to dominate women in the workplace.
Not only that, but his office was reportedly rigged with a device so that he could lock his door while sitting at the desk.
“Lauer, who was paranoid about being followed by tabloid reporters, grew more emboldened at 30 Rockefeller Center as his profile rose following Katie Couric’s departure from “Today” in 2006. His office was in a secluded space, and he had a button under his desk that allowed him to lock his door from the inside without getting up. This afforded him the assurance of privacy. It allowed him to welcome female employees and initiate inappropriate contact while knowing nobody could walk in on him, according to two women who were sexually harassed by Lauer.”
The Huffington Post also wrote:
“Several reports came out on Wednesday detailing alleged misconduct by Matt Lauer, hours after it was announced the anchor was fired from his longtime hosting gig on “Today.”
A report from Variety, which the outlet said was the result of a two-month-long investigation into Lauer’s behavior, said the “Today” host once gave a colleague an explicit note and sex toy. Lauer also reportedly showed his penis to a female employee in his office at NBC, and had quizzed female producers in the office about whom they’d slept with.
Three women told Variety that they were victims of sexual harassment by Lauer.
Variety interviewed dozens of current and former staffers at NBC as part of their investigation.
“Their stories have been corroborated by friends or colleagues that they told at the time. They have asked for now to remain unnamed, fearing professional repercussions,” the publication reported.
Since Lauer’s firing on Wednesday, NBC has received at least two more complaints about the TV host, an unnamed source told The New York Times.”
